Welcome to my website. This site features information about my book, Acquainted with Autism, which is published by Warner Press of Anderson, Indiana.
My family’s journey of autism began in 1995 when our youngest son Taylor began showing signs of autism right after his first birthday. Development already mastered, suddenly regressed and disappeared. In place of it, we saw strange new behaviors that truly baffled us. The second year of his life was a constant, ever changing picture of something we didn’t yet understand. By his second birthday he was diagnosed with Kanner’s (aka Classic) autism. We were relieved to know the name of the condition our son had, but still had no idea what the years ahead would be like.
Our family has often said that autism changes everything and that people wouldn’t believe it unless they lived it for a few days. Many other families we’ve connected with over the years have expressed the same sentiment. Our story shows what sounds almost unbelievable, and shows you the stress and strain all families with autism deal with, to some degree. The book will teach you enough to empathize and relate to other families who are a part of your life journey.
While this book was written with the intention of teaching people what life with autism is like; I quickly discovered that people already living the life of autism were as blessed by the book. The feedback I’ve received is filled with words like, “You said things I could never find words to say.”…or “I can’t believe how honest you were, thank you for sharing your emotions.”
The book is often described as “two books in one,” because the life story is enlightening, while the second part of the book teaches the reader how they can learn to help and minister to the entire family. You will learn practical, helpful things that will aide you in your quest to reach out and help.
One special chapter is devoted just to churches, teaching them how to create ministries of inclusion for children with autism. You can read more about the book in the chapters section of this site.
